Solihull newsagents celebrates 90th anniversary

A FAMILY-OWNED newsagents celebrated its 90th anniversary with a community event.

Meriden MP Saqib Bhatti was joined by Solihull Mayor, Coun Diana Hol-Allen MBE, and representatives from Mondelez International, who sponsored the event.

Mr Bhatti said:“I am so pleased to have celebrated the 90th year of Widney News, the event was a real success, and it was a pleasure to see so many members of the community come together to support a local, family-owned business.

“Widney News is a great example of the wonderful independent retailers within the constituency.

“Advocating for local businesses is one of my priorities and during Independent Retailers Month, I encourage everyone to support the amazing businesses within our community.”

As it was international chocolate day, Mondelez International provided free Cadbury’s chocolate to attendees.

Simon Phillips, owner of Widney News, said: “We were delighted that Saqib Bhatti MP for Meridan, could join us at Widney News as we celebrated National Independent Retailers Month and World Chocolate Day on Friday the 7th July 2023.

“It was also our 90th year of trading as an independent Newsagent as the business was founded in 1933.

“We hope all enjoyed the day celebrating with us and thanks our sponsor, Mondelez International for providing chocolates in the day.

“We also appreciate the incredible support we received from other local businesses in the area including Vernon James Butchers who supplied the sandwiches and Flowers of Beauty who provided the flowers.

“Special mention for Natasha Hobkirk-Smith who made our lovely 90th Anniversary cake.

“Here at Widney News, we pride ourselves on being in centre of the community and hope everyone had a fantastic day celebrating with us.”
