Solihull named in top 30 spenders to help smokers quit

Solihull Editorial 27th Nov, 2023   0

SOLIHULL Council has been named as one of the top spending authorities to help residents quit smoking.

Online vape store Go Smoke Free says Solihull came in at 19th and has spent an average of £1,139.56 per person quitting smoking, including pharmacotherapies – prescribed medication to help people stop.

According to the data 70 people have self-reported to have quit the habit.

It also revealed the authority spent £68,125.00 in total on delivery of stop smoking services for the year to June 2023.

Go Smoke Free says it analysed data from NHS Stop Smoking Services in England between April to June 2023 to determine how much each local authority spends on each person attempting to quit smoking.

A spokesman for Go Smoke Free said: “The public findings from the Stop Smoking Services in England offer a fascinating insight into how each local authority supports people to quit smoking and the budget they are willing to allocate to this.

“Considering these results only cover the first quarter of the year, it will be interesting to see how these rankings change as further 2023 data is released, detailing how much each local authority is spending annually on stop-smoking services.”

Gateshead came out on top with the data revealing the authority spent £43,190 per person looking to quit smoking between April and June 2023.

A Council spokesperson said: “We are committed to supporting people in making the choice to quit.

“We know that the majority of people who smoke want to quit, but it can take on average six attempts to successfully stop smoking.

“A free dedicated stop smoking service, which provides advice, information and support is available locally.

“Information on how to access this service is available on the Council website.”
