Solihull MPs launch campaign to change constituency names

Solihull Editorial 22nd Jul, 2021   0

SOLIHULL’S MPs are campaigning for new names for their constituencies.

Saqib Bhatti, Member of Parliament for Meriden, and Julian Knight, Member of Parliament for Solihull, have appealed to the Boundary Commission for England to change the names of their constituencies.

Both MPs are in favour of the changes with proposals to change Meriden to ‘Solihull East and Meriden’ and to change Solihull to ‘Solihull West and Shirley’.

“It is right to have a constituency name that represents even more of my constituents but also to keep a vital part of our constituency’s history,” said Mr Bhatti.

“I am hopeful this will support efforts to encourage greater voter participation in the area and foster deeper ties within the community.”

Mr Knight added: “With the changes proposed by the Commission, which would bring the whole of Shirley into one constituency, it’s now time that Shirley is put on the Parliamentary map!

“Our community is so wonderful and diverse, and it’s important that the Parliamentary boundaries and constituency names reflect that too.”

Both MPs have launched campaigns which will be delivered to the Boundary Commission for England in support of the new constituency names.
