Solihull MP says he will vote to trigger Article 50 in wake of High Court's Brexit decision

SOLIHULL MP Julian Knight has announced he will vote to invoke Article 50 to trigger the country leaving the EU if he is given the chance.

His promise comes in the wake of the High Court’s decision that Theresa May’s Conservative Government can not trigger Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty on its own.

This means all Members of Parliament from all the political parties must vote on whether the UK can start the process of leaving the EU.

But the Solihull MP has said he wants to put constituents’ ‘minds at rest’.

Mr Knight said: “If it transpires that I am granted a vote on Article 50 I will be voting for the said Article to be invoked.

“The referendum was clear, the UK must leave the European Union and although I was on the wrong side of the referendum result I will not be on the wrong side of our nation’s democratic will.

“No ifs, no buts, no last minute abstentions.

“I will ensure that the will of the British people, as expressed in the referendum, is carried out.

“As for the nature of our future trading relationship with the EU that is obviously a matter for debate but it will not be as a member of the European Union, under any circumstances.”

The Government has said it will now appeal the High Court’s decision, with a further hearing expected next month.
