A DANGEROUS driver has been jailed for three years after a man was seriously injured in Shirley.

Richard Perrin was driving a white Toyota when he hit a van at the junction of Bills Lane and Shakespeare Drive in November 2023.

West Midlands Police said due to traffic, the victim managed to catch up with Perrin and got out of his van to ask Perrin why he had failed to stop.

Perrin told the victim that he didn’t realise he had hit his car. But as the victim tried to exchange details, Perrin drove over him, dragging him several feet up the road before he was released.

The 29-year-old victim was taken to hospital with serious injuries which he is still recovering from.

The 58-year-old was arrested from his home where officers noted the damage to the front of his car and a handprint on the bonnet.

Perrin of Whittle Road, Solihull, admitted to causing serious injury by dangerous driving at an earlier hearing and at Birmingham Crown Court.

He’s also been disqualified from driving for four-and-a-half years and must pass an extended re-test if he wishes to get his licence back.

Acting Detective Sergeant Lana Payne from Solihull Police, said: “This was a traumatic incident that the victim continues to recover from and he has also been unable to return to work.

“Had Perrin stopped at the scene initially, this would never have happened. I want to say thank you to the members of the public who helped the victim and assisted us with our investigation.”
