Solihull duo ready to take on the world at Irish Dancing competition

Solihull Editorial 2nd Apr, 2019   0

SOLIHULL youngsters’ dancing feet have earned them a role in the biggest dance competition in the world.

Kate Buchanan and Mia Harris will be representing the West Midlands at the World Irish Dancing Championships which is being held in North Carolina, America.

The duo, who attend St Peter’s Secondary School, will be taking part in three categories in the under 12 girls age group on April 14 at the first competition to be held outside of the UK.

To get a spot in the finals the 11-year-olds had to finish in the top five place in the West Midlands regional qualifier last November.

Kate and Mia came second and third respectfully.

Kate said: “I feel excited and proud of myself for getting this far and getting to compete in America.

“I also feel a bit nervous as it is a big opportunity for me and there are going to be lots of great dancers.

“Also I have never travelled this far for a competition.”

Mia: “I’m really excited to be going to America and especially as I also get to compete at the Irish Dancing World Championships doing something I really love.”

Since then have been training hard with their school, the Kidd School of Irish Dancing, where they have been dancing since the age of five.

There will be seven other pupils competing from the same dance school as Kate and Mia, which is set to cost around £1,500 each.

The team are hosting an afternoon tea part at Scanlon Club on Spring Road in Acocks Green this Saturday (April 6) from 3pm until 5pm.
