A FORMER student at Solihull Sixth Form College has secured a university place in the USA and is heading to Texas this month.

Sophie Da Silva completed her A level studies in summer 2023 and then worked as an intern at the College for three months before taking up her overseas placement.

She is heading to Christ for the Nations Institute, in Dallas, Texas to study Theology with Music Studies.

Sophie said: “I’m excited to be travelling to America to study and I’m looking forward to starting my course.

“I’m not quite sure what I want to do as a career yet, but I know that studying overseas will be a great experience and will help me whatever I decide to do in the future.”

Sophie studied A level Film Studies, Media Studies and Spanish while she was a student at the College, achieving all A and A* grades.

Her subsequent work as an intern saw her working in the Student Development Office, where she helped to co-ordinate

Student Societies and run charity fundraising and awareness campaigns for learners.

Sophie added: “I was taught by outstanding teachers, who gave me amazing support in bridging the gap between GCSEs and A Level, through their professional learning techniques and their determination.

“Whatever you are passionate about learning will make college life and studying, a fun adventure.

“Enjoy every second of college life.

“Balance revision time with having a laugh with friends, use your precious independent study time to the fullest and do not feel shy to ask for extra support.”

Anisa Lokat-Fanning, associate principal with responsibility for the Student Development Office, added: “We wish Sophie all the best for her adventure in America.

“She has been a valued member of the College community, both as a learner and a colleague, and I know she will be successful in this next stage of her career.”
