Solihull charity handed funds to help tackle fuel poverty

A SOLIHULL charity which helps vulnerable people has been given a helping hand to tackle fuel poverty.

Age UK Solihull has been handed £9,500 from National Grid’s Community Matters Fund to deliver energy advice and warm packs to people in need.

The latest round of Community Matters funding was launched by National Grid’s electricity distribution business as an urgent response to the national cost of living crisis, which is putting households at risk of fuel poverty.

Lucy Garratt at Age UK Solihull said: “The grant enables us to increase the number of home visits we can make to provide practical support to vulnerable people, and means we can help households to understand the wider support on offer and how to manage their own energy usage and finances more efficiently and effectively over the colder months ahead.”

The latest round of Community Matters funding will see a £2.5million shared among 300 grassroots organisations committed to tackling fuel poverty across the Midlands, South West and South Wales.

Alison Sleightholm, regulation and corporate director at National Grid, said: “Tackling fuel poverty is an immediate and pressing priority for us.

“This year, we’re giving away a record amount to support our most vulnerable.

“We’re pleased to see the first community organisations, charities and local authorities being awarded their grants.

“Our multimillion-pound fund is supporting a wide range of worthwhile and ambitious projects which will benefit communities this winter and help families keep homes warm.”

The Community Matters Fund is part of National Grid’s distribution Business Plan pledge to support vulnerable customers.
