SOLIHULL bookworms put their heads together to be crowned national charity quiz winners for the second times.

The 13-strong team of the Solihull U3A (University of the Third Age) Book Lovers Group combined their literary knowledge to scoop first prize in the annual Schoolreaders Book Club Quiz.

The quiz supports the work of Schoolreaders, a charity which recruit volunteers to listen to children read in primary schools and provide a boost to classroom teaching.

Solihull Book Lovers Group, who started their book club with ‘Why be happy when you could be Normal’ by Jeanette Winterson back in 2012 and are now reading Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell meet monthly in each other’s homes.

Throughout the pandemic they continued meeting on Zoom to ensure they remained connected, recommencing in person meetings again in July when they tackled the Quiz.

Hilary Derby, one of the original Solihull Book Lover founders, said: “I think the secret to our success is that we’re a close-knit group of voracious readers with many years of reading experience, both together and individually, and we’re not afraid to tackle a wide variety of genres which often makes for lively debate but also ensures quirky pieces of book trivia stick in our head.

“We’re very supportive of all that Schoolreaders does and are universal in our agreement that reading books is a sure-fire way to expand knowledge and a great way to keep children off their devices.”
