A CREATIVE youngster from Shirley is celebrating after winning a charity competition to design a book cover with a Community Hero theme.

Cillian. who loves to draw and read celebrated those in the armed forces with his design for his entry into the national Design a Book Cover competition organised by Scrivens Opticians and Hearing Care.

He won a £100 book voucher for his school library, a collection of children’s books for himself and a notebook with his design on the front.

Cillian said: “The lady at Scrivens gave me the colouring sheet after my eye appointment, and I chose to draw a picture of the Army.

“They’re my Community Heroes because they protect us, and my great-grandad Stan was an engineer in the RAF.

“I felt so proud and really happy when I found out I’d won. I’m also excited that my prize will help buy books for our school library.”

The competition called on young people to submit their entries with all entry proceeds from the £1 suggested donation going to Alzheimer’s Society.

Domeni White, branch manager at Scrivens on Stratford Road, said: “Alzheimer’s Society is our chosen charity and this activity has been a fantastic way to engage children while raising awareness of its vital work.

“This year’s colouring competition invited children to celebrate and thank our local Community Heroes through creativity.

“Cillian’s colourful entry really stood out and was a wonderful tribute to the armed forces.”
