Shirley should be included in constituency name

Solihull Editorial 26th Nov, 2022   0

THE Boundary Commission has recently published its revised proposals for Parliamentary constituencies and for some in Solihull, this may result in a change in your Member of Parliament.

The Solihull constituency will be losing the wards of Elmdon and Silhull.

However, the ward of Blythe (Monkspath, Tidbury Green, Dickens Heath and Cheswick Green) will become part of the new Solihull constituency.

Half of the new Parliamentary constituency will be made up of Shirley postcodes and I believe it is therefore right that Shirley is included in the name of the constituency.

I will be writing formally to the Boundary Commission requesting that the constituency is renamed to Shirley West and Shirley in order to better reflect the area that is covered.

I would ask constituents to consider supporting my proposals by signing the petition that I intend to send to the Commission.

The petition can be found on my website.

On a completely different matter, I completely understand the concerns of those constituents who have raised the issue of illegal immigration with me recently, in particular, the images of migrant crossings over the English Channel.

I want to assure you that the Government is doing everything in its legal powers to bring this situation to a close.

The Home Secretary last week come to an agreement with her French counterparts that will see a 40 per cent increase in the number of UK-funded officers patrolling French beaches.

The key to tackling this crisis is by stamping up our efforts to prevent human traffickers in France from conducting their activities.
