ONE of Shirley’s oldest scout groups is calling on former members and volunteers to share their memories as it prepares to celebrate its 100th anniversary.

The 1st Shirley Scouts is set to mark its centenary and are on the hunt for memorabilia, written reports or to listen to stories about times gone by from anyone who has been involved with the group.

There will be a birthday party on the weekend of July 14 and old friends are being invite along to join in the festivities.

The group said it decided is the 100th birthday of the organisation.

In 1912 a Mr Wyatt, who was a teacher at St James School, founded a Scout Troop in Shirley but the troop folded when he left the district.

However in 1918 Mr J Benson, then Headmaster at St James School, restarted the troop which was eventually registered as First Shirley Scout Group on January 1, 1919.
