Shirley Park gets a spring clean thanks to Silhillians

SPRING cleaning was on the agenda as a team of Silhillians cleared Shirley Park of rubbish.

Members of Shirley Lions, Round table, Asda Parkgate, community groups and Councillors joined forces with Friends of Shirley Park and collected more than 20 bags of litter.

Armed with litter pickers and bin bags the group went off in all directions and the whole of the park and areas along the Stratford Road were cleared.

At the start of the day eight supermarket trolllies were found and returned to the shops. were retrieved and returned.




Friends of Shirley Park was founded in 2017 by local residents who want to make a difference to Shirley Park and the surrounding Shirley area.

Helena Morrissey, chair of the group, said the group have a litter picking session on the first Saturday of every month, paint park bollards and gate, clean graffitti and have planted spring bulbs.


She added: “This is just the start, and we are in the process of applying for sponsorship for other larger projects, such as the placement and maintenance of large planters around the park, planting new fruit trees and generally enhancing the park environment.

“Our aim is to help maintain and improve Shirley Park to ensure that it is a safe, attractive and wildlife-friendly environment for all Shirley residents and other park users.”
