A SPRING clean was on the cards in Shirley as part of a nationwide campaign to keep the country tidy.
The Friends of Shirley Park members rolled up their sleeves and got to work to complete four litter picks in the park and surrounding area in one weekend to mark Great British Spring Clean month.
As well as litter picking, some members of the group also did improvement work, such as laying down bark on walkways in the woodland walk part of the Stratford Road park.
Friends of Shirley Park chair, Helena Morrissey, said: “We had a great turn-out for each session and probably had around 80 or so volunteers over the course of the whole weekend, including a number of children which was lovely.
“We are trying to get the ‘anti-litter’ message out there by setting a good example and by being seen trying to combat the problem and to have children involved is a great way to teach them from an early age that littering is wrong.”
The group hold litter picking sessions on the first Saturday of every month at the park.
