Shirley Chrysanthemum Society competition blooms despite fears centre could be bulldozed

THE SHIRLEY Chrysanthemum Society held what could be its last early season competition at Bromsgrove’s Burcot Garden Centre as it searches for a new venue and more members to safeguard its future.

The centre is currently the subject of a housing development which would see the venue bulldozed and dwindling member numbers have also put the society’s future in doubt.

There were two main winners at the show – Chris Amphlett who accrued the most points and won three trophies and John Hadley who scored high with four of his exhibits.

He received silvers for Best Exhibit and Best Vase where he also took bronze. He was also awarded a certificate of merit and certificates for his achievements in the ‘best of’ categories.

The society’s treasurer John Rogers said: “Although we had just four exhibitors and some categories had to be left uncontested, we did have 93 blooms entered which was similar to last year’s and was, by the end, a very satisfying show.”

He appealed to anyone who wanted to join or anyone who could provide a new venue for next year’s competitions to call him on 01527 544220.

The early flowering show is held around mid-September and the late show at the start of November.
