FUN IN in the sun was the order of the day as Shirley Carnival spread music and joy at the weekend.

Thousands of people and pirates descended upon Shirley Park and were entertained by Shirley pipe band, a punch and Judy Show, fair stalls, and the pirate express while thrill seekers took the the fair rides and games.

Following the official opening by Captain Jack Sparrow pirates roamed throughout the park with their parrots and spades ready to dig up any treasure and getting the crew in high spirits.

Lion Gillian Conlon, Carnival Chairman, said “This year we introduced some new elements to the carnival and it certainly went down well with the crowds.

“The day went off fantastically and we were delighted that the weather was so wonderful – it really does make a difference to events such as this.”

The Lions are still counting up the money but Gillian indicated that the carnival raised roughly £5,000 which will be donated to a range of local charities.

Observer photogrpaher Jon Mullis was on hand to capture a slice of the action.
