IT WAS a case of second time lucky for a Sheldon roadside patrol who claimed the AA’s highest accolade for its roadside patrols across the UK.
Shaun Jones, who is on hand to help AA members throughout the Midlands, wowed the judges in his driving tests and mock interviews.
But this wasn’t the 33-year-old’s first attempt at the gong.
He was previously nominated for the prestigious role but missed out on the opportunity when Covid-19 struck.
The father of three will now spend the next 12 months as the public face of the company and represent the AA n within the motor industry and before the media.
Shaun said: “I can’t quite believe I’ve won.
“I was so proud just to have been nominated, especially when surrounded by so many outstanding Patrols, so when I heard I’d been shortlisted as one of the finalists I was totally gobsmacked.
“To be named ‘Patrol of the Year’ is unbelievable – it hasn’t quite sunk in yet.
“I’m really looking forward to what lies ahead during the coming year. I dedicate my award to the memory of my late father, who always encouraged me to push for better.”
Shaun joined The AA seven years ago and during this time, he’s gone the extra mile to reach all manner of breakdowns including assisting an elderly driver who had struck a pothole whilst transporting her young grandchildren home, damaging both nearside tyres.
And even though it was past the end of his shift, Shaun took the driver and passengers home before sourcing two replacement tyres from a local tyre centre, fitting them to the vehicle and recovering it back to its grateful owner.
Outside of work, Shaun has recently developed a keen interest in football, and has taken on a coaching role with his son’s junior team.
Dean Keeling, managing director of Roadside Services at The AA, said: “The AA Awards ceremony gives us the opportunity to recognise the efforts of AA people who go above and beyond to help others, and the Patrol of the Year award is the epitome of this.
“With the skills to turn around a broken-down driver’s day and get them back on their way despite the challenges of working at the roadside in all weathers.
“Shaun exemplifies the values which set AA patrols apart.
“His award is a true testament to his hard work, persistence, outstanding service and dedication and is a well-deserved accolade. Congratulations to Shaun and all our finalists and award winners.”
