Sandra takes to the skies for Solihull breast cancer haven

Solihull Editorial 6th Mar, 2020   0

A CANCER survivor from Solihull will leap into the blue as she skydives thanks to a support charity.

Sandra O’Connell, who admits she is ‘terrified’ of heights, hopes to raise £500 for Breast Cancer Haven, a sanctuary for people undergoing treatment.

To prepare for her jump, Sandra is able to practice at the Resorts World indoor skydive turbine.

Sandra said: “I’ve had breast cancer and it has been a long battle. When I was having treatment I used the haven myself.

“I had surgery just over two years ago and though I am scared of heights I thought the skydive would be the best way to show support.

“On May 23 I will skydive for Breast Cancer Haven, to help them continue to support women and men affected by breast cancer, through their bespoke programme of support.

“When cancer came ‘banging on my door’ and after enduring multiple surgeries, chemotherapy and further treatment over the years, it left me so fragile and vulnerable.

“I never thought I would walk this journey, not ever.

“This “safe haven” helped me in so many ways – I was fortunate enough to be given several wonderful treatments at Breast Cancer Haven.

“I came away feeling relaxed and fully supported, and I think everyone deserves to feel this way.”

Breast Cancer Haven fundraising manager Caroline Kelley said: “We are absolutely delighted that Sandra is choosing to fundraise for us by taking on this amazing challenge of skydiving.

“Her support will allow us to reach even more people, like Sandra, living with or beyond breast cancer in the West Midlands.“

The support centre in Olton gives patients a tailored package of counselling and therapies to help with the emotional and physical side-effects of breast cancer and it’s treatment.

Professional nurses and therapists give practical advice on things like healthy eating and exercise, and offer regular classes and support groups.
