CELEBRATIONS were in order as 4th Knowle Sea Scouts proudly completed their 50th anniversary celebrations with a successful Royal Navy review.

The event was especially significant as it marked the group’s first Royal Navy review since 2019, bringing together members from across the Scout group – Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers and Network – to share in the milestone.

The move reaffirmed the group’s place among just 103 Royal Navy-affiliated Sea Scout units in the UK.

Senior Royal Navy and Scouting leaders in attendance including Brigadier Ged Salzano, commander of the Royal Navy Cadet Forces, Nathan Cole, UK Sea Scout lead, Andrew Lloyd, deputy chief volunteer of England and Mat Spence, Solihull County lead volunteer.

Brigadier Salzano carried out a formal uniform review led before the group gave a hands-on demonstrations of core nautical and Scouting skills, including pioneering, knot-tying and first aid.

Brigadier Salzano said: “Sea Scouting is about more than learning skills – it’s about building friendships and resilience.

“These young people support one another and how much being part of Sea Scouting means to them.

“I am very pleased that the review has been a success – it is well deserved.”

The group also became the first to be presented with the new Royal Navy Sea Scout Burgee updated design.

Chris Harrison, group lead volunteer, said: “This achievement means so much to everyone involved. Our young people and volunteers have worked incredibly hard, and passing with flying colours is something we’re all proud of.

“Receiving the new Royal Navy Sea Scout Burgee is a fantastic honour – and achieving this success in our 50th year makes it even more special as we look forward to the future.”
