Retired greyhounds looking for a new place to call home

RETIRED racing greyhounds will be racing to Stoneleigh next week.

The Greyhound Trust is welcoming pups, owners and budding owners to their fun day at the Kennel Club building in Stoneleigh Park on Saturday (October 7) from 9am.

Greyhounds and other breeds can take part in dog shows including best in show, best fancy dress and best sausage catcher.

And there will also be workshops on canine massage, stalls, and displays from the ‘Tailwaggers’ display team.

A spokesman from the charity said: “Despite being a well-known breed of dog, many misconceptions exist, which can make finding homes for greyhounds difficult after they finish racing.

“Many feel that a ‘retired’ greyhound is old, but they typically retire between three to five years-old, going on to live for 12 to 14 years.

“Despite being known for their speed and athleticism, the greyhound is a 40 mph couch potato, and they enjoy plentiful opportunities to sleep and relax.

“The only breed of dog mentioned by name in the bible, the gentle and calm nature of these dogs has made them an increasingly popular choice for therapy work in care homes, schools, and hospitals around the UK.”

Entry to the fun day is by donation and parking is free.
