A SHIRLEY couple are celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary after first meeting back in 1947.

June and Maurice will be marking their Platinum Anniversary on Sunday, December 6.

They got engaged in 1948 and married in St James’ Church two years later.

In 1953 they welcomed their daughter Susan to the world and watched her bloom into a keen member of Shirley Riding Club, competing in a host of showjumping events.

The couple have also been dog-grandparents to a number of Old English Sheepdogs.

Sadly Susan died in 2014 after a brave battle with cancer.

Over the years Maurice worked as a clerk in a Birmingham solicitors and June helped at her parents’ shoe shop in Shirley.

Maurice enjoys cricket and over the years he has held many roles at Shirley, Olton and Warwickshire clubs.

The 94-year-old also held the role of chairman at Elizabeth House residential home in Shirley for 40 years.

June’s passion for floral arranging has remained strong and has been a member of Knowle Flower Club for 50 years.

And the secret to their long and happy marriage?

“Give and take, and resolving arguments quickly,” Maurice said.

The couple are hoping to receive a card from the Queen and are planning a champagne celebration with their son-in-law.
