HALL GREEN residents had to be evacuated from their homes after masked men attempted to ram-raid a post office – sparking fears of a gas explosion.

The raiders swooped on the post office on Stratford Road, Hall Green, Birmingham, at 1.45am in the early house of this morning (May 10).

The surrounding homes above the post office had to be evacuated as the fire service repaired a broken gas pipe.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: “Four masked men attempted to use a white ford transit van to remove the ATM machine.

“They were unsuccessful and fled the scene in a different car, leaving the van behind, which has since been recovered for forensics.
