Reflection garden opens for bereaved families at Heartlands Hospital

A GARDEN for parents and families to create memories and remember their babies has been opened at Heartlands Hospital.

The Reflection Garden has now been renovated to give inpatients at the Eden Suite or a place to visit whenever they wish to reflect and remember their precious babies who sadly died too soon.

It was opened by two mums, who did not want to be named, but have been supported by the dedicated team at the suite ahead of babyloss awareness week which runs from October 9 to 15.

The Reflection Garden was funded by University Hospitals Birmingham Charity through donations from our supporters – many of whom have lost babies too soon themselves.

The charity say it allows the bereavement team to offer an outside space that helps parents to take that first step outside but still in the comfort of the team’s support.

Speaking at the opening Nicola Klein, who has suffered baby loss herself and is now a mental health peer support worker at Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust, says the garden would give families a space to grieve and create memories with their baby.

She added: “Grief can make you feel isolated and really trapped in some ways.

“But coming out into the fresh air it’s really safe to do that and it’s really good to do that .

“Some people like to create memories with their baby and take baby out, this is a really good space and safe space to do that.

“From my job point of view it’s a really good getting out for mental health reasons this is a reflective space it is designed for people to sit there.”

The Eden Suite cares for families who sadly lose their baby through miscarriage, stillbirth or neonatal death.

UHB Charity has funded a CuddleCot for the suite, which keeps baby cool and extends the period of time that parents have to spend with their baby.

The Charity said it will continue to provide added extras for the unit, from cutting-edge pieces of technology, to patient comforts and support, donations from supporters will allow the Charity to go over and above for parents on the Eden Suite.
