A MILITARY veteran at a Balsall Common care home helped children from the local primary school find out more about the Second World War by answering questions on what life was like at the time.

Balsall Common Primary School pupils contacted Harper Fields to see if any residents could assist them and 99-year-old Maurice Bennet was happy to oblige.

In fact, the nonagenarian was overjoyed to contribute some of his stories.

Maurice, part of Bomber Command during the conflict, answered many questions via activity co-ordinator Sharon.

A live-link chat was also set up so the children could quiz him during a virtual meeting.

Sharon said the pupils really enjoyed their meeting with Maurice and learned so much from him.

“Maurice was thrilled to be asked to talk to the children, he had a wonderful time and found the children to be very attentive and engaged with him.

“He said he would be more than happy to do something similar again.

“He is understandably very proud of his service but does not see himself as a hero as we all do.”
