A KIND-HEARTED volunteer has been honoured for her services to the community.

Chris Dunster has received a British Empire Medal for her work in the borough particularly her role at Literary Litter Pickers in Olton and Hobs Moat.

The mum of two told the Observer: “I was really surprised to see the letter.

“Since the news broke I have had some lovely comments from people which make it even better.

“The fact that someone was willing to nominate me was a really thoughtful thing to do.”

Over the past two years the groups have met up once a month at the two libraries and collected litter from nearby streets and green spaces.

Residents, volunteers and staff from local businesses come together to help tidy up the borough and afterwards go back to the libraries and catch up over a cup of tea.

More than 600 bags of rubbish have been collected from the Olton collections alone.

Chris said other group such as the Scouts are starting to get involved.

She said: “I prefer to and relax by doing things.

“I have always liked to be part of a team and always enjoyed working.

“I guess I am just making a new team to be a part of and we are making the area look nice which makes me feel happy to see and I hope it makes others happy too.”
