Plans to expand information services in Solihull on agenda

PLANS to expand Solihull Council’s information and advice service are set to be discussed.

Cabinet will be asked at its meeting on Thursday (February 12) to approve plans for a new contract for the service.

The proposed new service will focus on face-to-face provision at different venues in the local area, to meet individual needs, alongside phone support.

This aims to improve accessibility for all, including those with disabilities, language barriers, and those who are digitally excluded. It will complement existing services such as the Family Hubs and Here2Help website.

Currently the service provides information and advice to adults across Solihull about a range of topics including care, benefits and managing debt, helping people improve their resilience, health and financial independence.

It is based in The Core in Solihull town centre and Chelmsley Wood Library and the current contract ends in September.

Councillor Tony Dicicco, cabinet member for adult social care and health, said: “The service is hugely important in helping to support people’s independence and wellbeing, whilst reducing the need for ongoing or repeat support from the Council and other voluntary and community sector organisations.

“During tough times for local authorities, we are really pleased to put forward proposals to continue to deliver this service, whilst taking on board feedback and ways we can improve it.

“Engagement and surveys with existing service users, residents and providers showed feedback about the service was very positive, however transport was a barrier to accessing advice in person, with the majority supportive of more local pop-up services.

“Instead of support based out of just two sites, the proposed service will deliver support at different venues in the heart of our communities, such as libraries and community centres. This approach should make accessing these services easier and more convenient, enabling us to support more people.”

If Cabinet approves the plans, the Council will begin a tender process for the new contract which could be provided by a single provider, or a lead provider with subcontracted partners.
