Petition to stop houses near Berkswell WIndmill

Sarah Mason 14th Apr, 2025   0

A PETITION has been launched to stop 250 homes from being built near Berkswell Windmill.

Plans put forward by Barwood Development Securities Ltd for the houses on land at Pheasant Oak Farm on Hob Lane in Balsall Common were deferred by Solihull Council’s planning committee following a legal challenge.

Developers say a number of the homes built would be affordable houses for social rent and shared ownership.

The development would also include a children’s play areas; community orchard and ecological areas; pedestrian and cycle access from Waste Lane and Windmill Lane to “enhance connection into the village” and a sustainable drainage system.

The petition is calling for new public green space opposite the iconic Berkswell Windmill instead of houses.

Since it was launched the petition has garnered more than 650 signatures and the support of Meriden and Solihull East MP, Saqib Bhatti.

Jeanette McGarry, custodian of Berskwell Windmill, said: “The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, Midlands Mills Group and the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England are supporting our request for Public Open Space (park) on Windmill Lane/ Waste Lane and community orchard so that people may enjoy the most spectacular view of this iconic Windmill all year round.

“This will also protect the setting of this iconic Grade II Star Listed Windmill and the sails will be able to turn freely.

“This is strongly supported by Historic England.”
