A PETITION has been launched to keep a long-standing Hall Green supermarket open.
Campaigners are calling on Waitrose bosses to keep the Stratford Road store open after it was earmarked for closure by supermarket bosses.
The Stratford Road supermarket has served generations of families in Hall Green and surrounding areas for more than 50 years.
Shopper, Debbie Morton set up a petition calling for the store to remain open and gathered more than 800 signatures in just over a week.
On the online petition she said: “This branch has been an integral part of our community for over 50 years, serving high-quality products and providing employment opportunities, all in a convenient location for many residents.
“The closure will not only impact the people of Hall Green, it will also affect those of Moseley, Kings Heath and Shirley who shop there.”
Comments on the petition describe the store as a ‘huge part pf the community’, with signers saying they were ‘devastated’ to hear of its upcoming closure.
Catherine Tunley wrote: “We need this store, some of us like to go to the shops, a lot of elderly people who go there, it is their lifeline. The cashier who serves them may be the only person they have spoken to in a week.”
Pamela Vaughan added: “It provides excellent service for Hall Green and surrounding areas such as Moseley etc. and over the years it has never failed to deliver.
“The staff are exceptionally professional, helpful and friendly, things I really value. Please keep this store open.”
In a statement to The Observer Waitrose said: “Unfortunately we don’t disclose any information because of the sensitive nature. However, as soon as any information is available, we release it on our website and/or via the local press.”
