PD Wez puts his paws up

A ‘PAWSOME’ police dog is putting his paws up to enjoy his well-earned retirement.

PD Wez is set to retire after a fantastic seven-year career of detaining suspects, finding firearms and stolen property.

The nine-year-old German Shepherd was a graduate from West Midlands Police’s dedicated dog training unit at Balsall Common. He became an official member of the police team in 2018 working for some years alongside his dad, PD Stavros.

In 2020 PD Wez detained a suspected armed robber who had robbed a shop and was attempting to flee in a car. PD Wez and his handler blocked the car in and detained the man as he tried to run off. A Taser, machete and CS gas were recovered from the car.

Following a search of the suspect’s flat PD Wez also found a second suspect hiding.

Last year the courageous K9 was also recognised for his efforts to protect the public during the Villa v Legia game in 2023.

PD Wez celebrated his ninth birthday and retired on the same day after a courageous career.

He will now spend his retirement with PC Marie Darby, who he has a special relationship with after spending the last seven years working together.

PC Darby, from the Dog Unit, said: “I’m so proud of Wez and what we have achieved together as partners. He is an amazing police dog and partner, and I will miss working with him.

“But I’m so happy that he gets to spend his retirement at home with me.

“Our police dogs are amazing, and we simply couldn’t do this job without them.”
