A ‘HEARTBREAKING’ number of dogs have been seized by Solihul Council over the past five years.
A Freedom of Information request by Puppies.co.uk, which sells puppies, to Solihull Council revealed 238 stray dogs have been seized by the council since January 2020.
The company said this number doesn’t account for dogs reported, only those taken by the council, the real number of stray dogs in Solihull could be much higher.
In response to the findings, a spokesperson at Puppies.co.uk said: “The data only scratches the surface of the wider issue of pet neglect. After all, not all dogs believed to be neglected are reported to councils so the real number is likely much higher.
“We know that dog ownership increased in the pandemic but as life returns to normal and with the current cost of living crisis, some owners are struggling to care for their pets.
“The rise in animal neglect and abandonment is a heartbreaking reminder of the responsibility that comes with pet ownership. A dog is a lifelong commitment, not a short-term convenience. It takes time, energy and patience to build a trusting relationship. Owners need to be prepared for the challenges that come with caring for an animal.”
The company said anyone who is considering getting a dog should do their homework firs on the breed to ensure it’s the right fit for your lifestyle.
A spokesperson for Solihull Council said: “We work with Birmingham Dogs Home. If people find a stray dog in Solihull they can report it by calling 0121 643 5211, but if it’s reported late in the afternoon, the dog warden might not collect the dog until the next working day.
“Alternatively you can take the dog to Birmingham Dogs Home yourself.”
