Nick's mission: 100 miles in 100 hours with 100 halves sunk

A SOLIHULL man is on a mission to walk 100 miles in 100 hours visiting 100 pubs and drinking 100 halves in the process.

Nick Wormald embarked on ‘The 100 Challenge’ last Monday, August 23 to raise £25,000 for the charity, Maggs Day Centre which provides support for the homeless and vulnerable in Worcestershire.

He set off from Purity Brewery nearly Studley and will be joined by Mel Kirk, chief executive of Maggs, for the trip.

“As an organisation, we rely on the support of individuals like Nick to help fund the work we do,” said Mel.

“As we emerge from many months of lockdown it is more important than ever that we have a network of proper support to help the more vulnerable members of society.

“Calculated by head of population, the incidence of rough sleeping in Worcester (one person in 3,500) is higher than in London (one person in 7,800).”

Nick said his fundraising endeavours had been inspired by Captain Sir Tom Moore, who raised more than £32 million for the NHS Charities Together.

“The 100 Challenge initiative was founded upon the dramatic reduction in charitable income resulting from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic,” he said.

“At the inception of Captain Tom’s incredible endeavours, I undertook to raise one per cent of the amount raised by Captain Tom but (fortunately) to be capped at £10,000. It is, of course, only recently that fundraising could begin.

“The 100 Challenge embraces so many aspects that are great about our culture including welfare, canals, pubs, open countryside and the incredible generosity of our people.

“This has already allowed us to increase our ambitions to £25,000.”

Nick planed to be back at Purity Brewery today Friday, August 27 at midday after completing a route broadly around the Worcestershire county boundary.
