BUDDING politicians visited the Houses of Parliament to get a peek into life as an MP.

Pupils from Cedars Academy in Acocks Green, visited the Houses of Parliament to find out more about the roles of MPs and develop their knowledge on Parliament and its history.

The group consisted of school council members as well as some specially-selected year six pupils who had demonstrated an interest in politics.

The children had a tour of the House of Commons and House of Lords and were given the opportunity to sit in on debates around Birmingham and inter-faith communities.

They were also given a history lesson on the importance of the government, took part in a workshop on suffragettes and had a discussion around voting and how new laws are implemented, before giving their opinions on what they think should be changed in schools.

Phoebe Taylor, year three teacher, said: “The trip was a fantastic experience for the children to gain a real insight into our political landscape and the role that MPs play.

“Some of the children had never been to London so it was an opportunity to for them to see some of the landmarks in person and take a tour of one of London’s most famous buildings.

“We not only involved our school council, which is made up of pupils from years three to six, but also some of our Year 6 children who had all written letters expressing why they would like to go on the trip.

“Many of them had been inspired by a visit from Yardley MP, Jess Phillips, who visited the school a few years ago to speak to the children about what it’s like to be an MP and are now keen to become politicians themselves.”
