New venue for ‘parkruns’ in Solihull - and you are invited to join tomorrow

SOLIHULL has a new venue for ’parkruns’ – and people are invited to take part tomorrow.

The free, weekly 5km timed runs are now taking place at Babbs Mill Local Nature Reserve as well as Brueton Park on Saturday mornings.

This Saturday, September 21, residents are invited to come to the Babbs Mill or Brueton parkrun from 8.30am and meet the volunteer teams.

Residents can also register to take part in the event or get involved behind the scenes by volunteering.

Solihull Council’s Public Health Team has been working closely with the Event Director at Brueton parkrun and Tudor Grange Kingshurst Academy to get the Babbs Mill parkrun set up.

Councillor Karen Grinsell, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Health, and Chair of the Solihull Health and Wellbeing Board, says: “I am delighted that Solihull now has two venues for parkruns.

“These events bring together people of all ages and levels of fitness. They offer health and wellbeing benefits to the people involved and are a great opportunity to get into volunteering.

“They can help people to lose weight, control diabetes and reduce anxiety or depression as well as developing strong friendships.

“We hope the Babbs Mill parkrun will be an excellent addition to the area.”

Andy Lucas, Event Director at Brueton parkrun, says: “Everyone does the parkrun at their own pace, whether that’s walking, jogging or running. And you’ll never finish last because there’s an official volunteer, called a tail walker, at the back of the group!

“During August over 600 people a week took part in a parkrun in Solihull, including about 40 first timers.

“We hold a first timer briefing before each event at 8:50am by our parkrun flag near the start. Whether you volunteer or take part you’ll need to register beforehand on our website (www.parkrun.org/register).

“You only have to do this once and don’t forget to bring a printed copy of your barcode.”

Andy continues: “To make this Saturday’s parkruns really stand out we’re encouraging everyone involved to wear blue. It should make a great spectacle in Babbs Mill and Brueton Park.”

Solihull parkruns take place on Saturday mornings starting at 9am. To register or find out more, visit www.parkrun.org.uk and search for the venue.
