Never forgotten: Call to hang baubles on Shirley's memory tree

SILHILLIANS are being asked to help add a splash of colour to Shirley Park and decorate a tree in memory of loved ones.

The Friends of Shirley Park planted a Christmas tree, near the Parkside flats and Asda, after noticing touching memorial baubles added to their annual festive treat.

Helena Morrissey, chair at Friends of Shirley Park, said previously members would sneak out one evening before Christmas and decorate one of the trees near the children’s play area with Christmas baubles for fun.

Inspired by the memorial baubles the group arranged for a real Christmas tree to be planted in the park, near Parkside flats and Asda, and decorated each Christmas as a memory tree.

Helena said: “We have decorated it with baubles and have invited people to add their own baubles (or other decorations) in memory of loved ones.

“Quite a few people have added baubles already and we hope many more will do so.

“It is a lovely way to remember people, and it also really brightens up the park and adds to the Christmas spirit.

“We are hoping it will become an established feature of the local Shirley community each Christmas and as a group, we are very proud of this particular project.”
