MPs join call for greater support over Remembrance Day parade costs

SOLIHULL MPs have have signed a letter calling on the Prime Minister for greater support for Remembrance Day parades across the country.

Saqib Bhatti, Meriden and Solihull East and MP, and Dr Neil Shastri-Hurst, Solihull West and Shirley MP, alongside fellow Conservative MPs and members of the House of Lords are calling on Sir Kier Starmer to help ease the pressures on groups who organise these vital events each year.

The letter draws attention to the increasing costs associated with road closures and traffic management, which can place a significant burden on organisers.

The letter states: “According to the Royal British Legion, these costs average around £2,000 per event and are frequently borne by local authorities, volunteer groups and charities such as the Royal British Legion.

“For smaller communities, this represents a significant financial burden and has led to concerns that some parades may be sclaed back or even cancelled.

“The Royal British Legion also estimate there are approximately 1.675 branches reporting a local parade on a road in their area.”

The letter calls on the Government to encourage and support local authorities to waive fees for Temporary Traffic Regulation Orders required for Remembrance Day parades; and establish a dedicated fund to assist with traffic management costs, including signage, barriers, and stewarding.

Mr Bhatti said: “Remembrance Day is one of the most important moments in our national calendar. It is a time when communities come together to honour the bravery and sacrifice of those who have served our country.

“It is deeply concerning that rising costs, particularly those linked to road closures and traffic management, are making it harder for local groups to organise these events. We must ensure that no community is prevented from paying their respects due to financial barriers.

“That is why I have joined colleagues in urging the Government to take practical steps, including waiving Temporary Traffic Regulation Order fees for Remembrance Day events and providing additional support for traffic management costs.”
