MP calls for Post Office services to restart in Meriden

Solihull Editorial 18th Apr, 2024   0

A CAMPAIGN has been launched calling for a Post Office to be reintroduced to Meriden following the retirement of the sub-postmaster.

The Meriden Post Office temporarily closed its doors on March 28 and residents have been left without services ever since.

The news of the sub-postmaster’s retirement and withdrawal of the premises for Post Office use went out on letters and has caused concern among the community.

In a letter to residents the Post Office cited the nearest sites being around three miles away Hampton In Arden and Gramercy Park in Coventry.

Meriden MP, Saqib Bhatti, has joined forces with Solihull Councillors Heather Delaney, Tony Dicicco, and Andrew Burrow calling on the company to introduce a mobile Post Office to the village ‘so no one is without access to vital services’.

Mr Bhatti said: “It is vital that people in Meriden village have easy access to Post Office services during the temporary closure of Meriden Post Office.

“The people of Meriden have made it clear that this will negatively impact their community and I will continue to campaign on this issue.”

The Post Office said it is hoping to resume services as soon as possible.

In the letter it said: “We apologise for the inconvenience the temporary closure may cause.

“We hope that our customers will continue to use Post Office services and details of alternative Post Office branches in the area.

“We will continue to work hard to restore services in the area as soon as possible.

“We would welcome any applications from potential retail partners interested in running a branch locally on our behalf.”
