Mormon community group cleaning up Solihull in borough wide initiative

Solihull Editorial 21st Jul, 2018   0

A MORMON community group has been cleaning up Solihull as part of a borough wide initiative.

Around 20 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, more commonly known as Mormons, met at Alcott Wood to help pick up litter, cut vegetation back and clear footpaths.

The group is supporting Solihull council’s “Love Solihull” conservation initiative.

Despite the sweltering conditions, the small group managed to clear 12 bags of rubbish and and 450 feet of footpath during a two-hour period on the morning of June 30.

Church members spread out across the wood in small groups, some wearing the distinctive Mormon Helping Hands tabards, to restore the public pathways and ensure safe public access to the area.

A representative of Love Solihull commented: “Love Solihull is all about supporting communities to make a difference, and enabling local communities to be able to play an active role in helping to make our borough a great place to live, work, and be active.

“It is about inspiring everyone to think about where we live and find ways to transform and make our neighbourhoods places that we can be proud of both now, and in the future.

“The work carried at Alcott Wood has created a much safer and friendlier environment for local residents to use and enjoy.

“Love Solihull and members of the church have been supporting each other on community projects since 2015 and we look forward to working alongside church members on many more projects to come”

The Mormon Helping Hands programme was established in 1998, and since then hundreds of thousands of volunteers have donated hours of service to their communities.

The program started in South America but has spread to nearly every corner of the world.
