Mighty Compton Organ ready to perform again

Solihull Editorial 31st Oct, 2022   0

THE MIGHTY Compton pipe organ will be in action again this weekend.

At the keys will be Kevin Grunill for a live concert on Sunday, November 6 at Fentham Hall, Marsh Lane in Hampton–in-Arden.

Doors will open at 1.30pm with curtain up at 2.30pm. Admission £10 on the door, including interval refreshments and parking.

Kevin has built a fine reputation as one of the UK’s busiest organists.

Over the years he has performed in strict tempo for ballroom dancing.

Kevin is a founder of The Penistone Cinema Organ Trust which preserves and presents a 1937 Compton (ex Paramount Cinema, Birmingham) at the Penistone Paramount Cinema.

He also formed The Astoria Centre in Barnsley which features all things cinema organ including a 1934 Compton (ex Astoria Cinema, Purley).

Kevin has worked as musical director and producer on a number of theatrical productions, ranging from The Good Old Days to Pantomime.

The Mighty Compton is a cinema pipe organ built in 1935 by the John Compton Organ Company and was first installed in the Tower Cinema at West Bromwich.

It entertained cinema going audiences there until its removal in 1965.

Purchased by the Society, it was then installed in the recreation suite of Marston Green Hospital, then at St. Martins School in Solihull before its last move in 2002 to its present home at Fentham Hall, Marsh Lane, Hampton-in-Arden, B92 0AH where it now rises from the stage in true ‘Blackpool’ fashion.
