Meriden school closes as ceiling tiles fall

A MERIDEN school is closed to pupils after part of a ceiling fell down.

Tiles fell from on of the classrooms at Meriden Church of England Primary School on Tuesday (June 24), which was unoccupied at the time.

The school has been closed to pupils and Solihull Council said arrangements have been made outdoor education nearby for the rest of this week.

An anonymous parent who contacted The Observer said: “This latest closure due to safety concerns raises serious questions about the council’s duty of care and whether budgetary decisions have taken precedence over children’s safety. It’s shocking that it has taken the collapse of ceiling materials inside a learning space to prompt emergency action.

“Parents, carers, and members of the local community are increasingly concerned that our children’s wellbeing is being compromised due to avoidable neglect.

“This is no longer a matter of inconvenience—it is a crisis of confidence in the council’s ability to provide safe, maintained learning environments. Our children deserve better.”

The Fillongley Road school is maintained by the Council – the Local Education Authority – and funds are delegated to schools under its control based on a formula.

A Solihull Council spokesperson said: “Some suspended ceiling tiles fell from a small section of a classroom at Meriden C of E Primary School on Tuesday whilst the room was vacant.

“Whilst we are currently looking into the circumstances that led to this, our top priority is the welfare and education of the children. As a result, we have closed the school building to assess the issue.

“Arrangements have been made for children to enjoy outdoor education nearby for the rest of this week. We hope to return children safely back to classrooms very soon and will keep parents updated.”
