Meriden MP speaks out in Commons after Reading terrorist attack kills three

MERIDEN MP Saqib Bhatti has offered his condolences to the loved ones of the victims of the Reading terror attack.

He also told the Home Secretary Priti Patel that the country must never weaken its resolve to beat terrorism.

Three men including school teacher James Furlong were stabbed to death in a Reading town centre park on Saturday.

Suspect Khairi Saadallah, aged 25, was reportedly previously known to the intelligence agencies.

Speaking in the House of Commons on Monday, Mr Bhatti asked the Home Secretary: “On behalf of the people of Meriden, I join the whole House in conveying my condolences to the loved ones of the victims of this heinous attack.

“I commend the police force and other emergency services, who once again acted heroically and put the safety of others before their own.

“Does my right hon. Friend agree that we must never weaken in our resolve to win the battle against terrorism, and that those who seek to divide us will never be allowed to succeed?”

In replying, the Home Secretary said: “My hon. Friend is absolutely right. Our objective is to ensure that those people are never successful and that our values of tolerance and respect prevail.

“At a time like this, of course we support our police, we respect and support our emergency workers, we think about the families of the victims and those who have been hurt, but ultimately our collective role has to be to unite as a country and stand against the type of hate and terrorism that are being perpetrated.”
