Meriden and Solihull East MP Saqib Bhatti calls for Government to do more to support rural pubs

MERIDEN and Solihull East MP Saqib Bhatti last week led a debate in Westminster Hall calling on the Government to recognise the vital role of rural pubs and to consider further fiscal support.

Opening the debate, Mr Bhatti highlighted the rich history, heritage and economic contribution of rural pubs across his constituency.

He described rural pubs as far more than places to eat and drink, arguing that they are essential community institutions that bring people together, support local jobs and preserve the unique character of villages and market towns.

Mr Bhatti noted that these establishments are not only important local businesses but also key parts of the area’s cultural heritage, with many dating back centuries and continuing to serve  as focal points for community life.

During the debate, Mr Bhatti highlighted the significant economic contribution made by rural pubs.

He noted that Meriden and Solihull East is home to almost 40 local pubs, supporting  approximately 1,740 jobs and contributing £61 million to the local economy.

Mr Bhatti also drew attention to the challenges facing many rural hospitality businesses, including rising energy costs, labour shortages, inflationary pressures and the cumulative burden of taxation and regulatory requirements.

He argued that targeted fiscal measures could help safeguard the future of rural pubs while supporting local economies and preserving valued community assets.

Mr Bhatti told the Observer:  “Rural pubs are far more than places to eat and drink.

“They are meeting places, employers and essential parts of the social fabric of our communities.

“Many have faced sustained pressures in recent years, from rising operating costs to changing consumer habits. It is important that we consider how the tax and business rates  system can support these valued institutions and help them continue to thrive.

“Our rural pubs contribute to economic growth, support local jobs, attract tourism and provide invaluable social spaces.

“They are part of our national heritage, and it is vital that we protect them for future generations.
