PUPILS at Marston Green Junior School got their running shoes on and raised more than £4,000 in honour of a class mate.

Year 4 pupils were left saddened when they heard Harry Cross had been diagnosed with Burketts non-hodgkinsons lymphoma in this spring.

Determined to do something to support the youngster his class rallied round and organised a 1.5km Race For Life around the school field with harry and his twin brother George cheering them on.

Brave Harry was given his diagnoses in the spring and at the end of the summer term he was given the all clear.

Joanna Weston Smith, year 4 group leader at the school said: “It was fantastic for Harry to take part in the Race for Life and to see the support he had from his friends.

“He is a very kind and popular member of the year group and regularly has the children laughing with his jokes.”

The class of 90-children and three teachers set out to raise £500 for Cancer Research UK.

But thanks to kind-hearted parents, family and friends they managed to raise a massive £4,7818.72.

Joanna said: “Over the week after the Race for Life there was lots of anticipation from year 4 about how much was raised and in the final assembly of the year Mrs Clark, the Head teacher, announced how much we raised.

“The Year 4 children and staff were elated as the teachers had only set a target of £500.

“Children and parents throughout the school also generously donated to this special fund-raising event; it truly shows the fantastic sense of community that we have within the Marston Green locality.”
