ELDERLY residents in Marston Green can enjoy a cosy sanctuary thanks to a group of young people.

The 12-strong team took part in a project supported by West Midlands Police and The Prince’s Trust to help stabilise young people’s lives, develop news skills and boost confidence and motivation.

As part of the 12-week course, the 16-25 year olds helped transform a room at Marston Green Baptist Church into a cosy sanctuary for elderly residents.

They also got work experience at MV Kelly, a Shirley construction company, and presented a Dragons’ Den pitch to secure the necessary materials for their project.

The students also had to fundraise for other supplies.

They also ran a raffle and used their charisma to secure generous donations from local businesses to use as prizes and finished off with a bake sale at Chelmsley Wood Police Station selling over 100 cakes.

West Midlands Police has helped thousands of people, aged between 16 and 25, to focus on their futures and turn their back on a life of crime or adverse experiences thanks to the Prince’s Trust Team programme.

Gary Chapman, Princes Trust manager for West Midlands Police said: “The project that the young people have completed has directly enhanced their local community.

“PCSOs Ghulam and Talbot have delivered a superb programme.

“This project demonstrates the power of partnership working.”

On completion of the project, three of the young people were offered apprenticeship opportunities with MV Kelly.

Rosemary Evans from Marston Green Baptist Church said: “We want to express how grateful we are for the support of The Prince’s Trust and MV Kelly for completing the project decorating the patio room at our church.

“I was very impressed by the keen young people who completed the project and found them all, without exception, polite and pleasant.

“They may not have had any previous experience of decorating, but with Dan’s guidance they took to it really well.

“It was a pleasure to have so many young voices in the Church. This was an excellent example of partnership working. Well done to all those involved.”
