Marathon hike to football stadiums in aid of prostate cancer

Solihull Editorial 1st Dec, 2022   0

INTREPID explorers put their best foot forward as they headed to six football grounds across the West Midlands in aid of Prostate Cancer UK.

The Stadium Strollers, a group of employees from Paragon Banking Group, hiked 26 miles to support the charity which aims to stop the disease from damaging the lives of men and their families.

The walk started at Molineux Stadium the home of Wolverhampton Wanderers FC and continued on to Bescot Stadium the home of Walsall FC then onto West Bromwich Albion’s The Hawthorns, Villa Park the home of Aston Villa FC, St Andrew’s for Birmingham City FC, before ending their marathon walking challenge at The ArmCo Arena, the home of Solihull Moors FC.

It was organised by Ian Kembery, the bank’s Group Test and Release Manager.

He said: “We decided to take on the challenge for Prostate Cancer UK because most of us are at an age where we need to be very aware of our health and sadly have family, friends and colleagues who have experienced cancer in one form or another.

“Earlier this year my cousin was diagnosed with prostate cancer and underwent chemotherapy which has seen his PSA level drop to 0.001.

“He is now receiving radiotherapy with a very bright outlook.

“We are delighted to have organised the challenge to help support Prostate Cancer UK and raise much needed awareness of the disease.”

The group, whose company’s headquaters is based in Solihull, raised £3,192.

Nicola Tallett, director of fundraising and supporter engagement at Prostate Cancer UK, said: “We are so grateful for the dedication of this group and so many others across the UK, who help Prostate Cancer UK fund scientific research to stop this disease damaging the lives of men and their loved ones.

“Everyone who supports Prostate Cancer UK has their own story, some heart-breaking and others heart-warming, but all united with a common aim to see a world where men’s lives are not limited by prostate cancer.

“We thank the Stadium Strollers for literally going that extra mile and joining us in our promise and commitment.”
