Marathon effort across Solihull in honour of parents with cancer

A DAUGHTER took on a 24 hour walking marathon in honour of her parents following their cancer diagnoses.

Bethany Fox (pictured)was determined to turn the negative into a positive and decided to raise funds for Stand Up To Cancer, which funds cancer research projects across the country.

She set off at 8pm and walked around Dickens Heath, where she lives, for around two hours before heading to her parents house and taking to the treadmill.

Just as dawn broke at 6am the 26-year-old headed to the canal and walked to Stratford and back with an hour to spare.

For her final hour she walked around her parents’ garden where she was cheered on by loved ones.

She said: “I remember thinking, I had eight hours left to go, when walking down the canal, and I just thought I actually cannot finish this walk.

“But with the help of my mom who joined me for some parts, I pushed through.”

This was the first time Bethany had embarked on a such a challenge and trained for a month before her big day.

She said she wanted to put her focus on something more positive and to motivate her mum and dad to fight their cancers.

She was left heartbroken and devastated after hearing her dad has prostate cancer.

Then weeks later all those feelings came flooding back when her mum was diagnosed with skin cancer.

Bethany said: “My parents diagnosis came as a huge shock, we firstly found out about my dad and I was just utterly heartbroken, myself and my dad both have the BRCA2 gene – which can increase a person’s risk to cancer – but still to hear he actually had it just killed me.

“My mom’s diagnosis was a few weeks later, I just thought when we will as a family get a break, it just all felt so unfair.”

So far Bethany has raised more than £2,800 and is hoping this will continue to grow.
