THIS is the face of a man police want to trace inconnection with an attempted abduction of a Shirley schoolgirl a fortnight ago.
The girl has worked with specialist officers to help an illustrator produce the hand drawn images of the suspect and also a hand with a distinctive mark across it.
The attempted abduction was reported at 8am on November 6 by the father of a 12-year-old girl after she had been approached by a man in a car in Clinton Road, Shirley as she was on her way to school at 7.45am.
The man grabbed the girl’s hand but she managed to get free and then forced the driver’s door back on him before running away.
She immediately reported the incident to her parents who called police and officers were able to immediately circulate a description of the car.
A 61-year-old man was arrested during the same morning, but was subsequently released from custody without charge.
Investigating the matter is Detective Sergeant Stu Grundy from the force’s Public Protection Unit. He said: “The girl was able to get a very good description of the man as well as noting that he smelt of alcohol.
“She has also been able to tell us about the silver car he was driving and that she saw a number of empty Carling cans which were discarded in the driver’s foot well of the car.
“The sketches of the man and the hand are quite distinctive; we would ask anyone who recognises who this person is to call us with the information.”
The man was white, approximately 60 years old, tall (as the car seat was pushed far back), he had side burns and brown/grey hair but was fairly bald at the front with possible facial stubble. He was also wearing a black leather jacket.
