A MAN has been jailed after being convicted of a spate of thefts in Solihull.

West Midlands Police have been working with local businesses in Shirley to help reduce shoplifting.

The man was jailed after he targeted a Tesco store on Stratford Road in Shirley.

The 43-year-old repeatedly targeted the store during August and assaulted staff as he escaped with the stolen items.

With the store’s support, officers were able to identify the thief and, after he pleaded guilty at court, he was jailed for 26 weeks.

A 40-year-old woman has also been charged with theft and will appear at Birmingham Magistrates Court on October 19.

Solihull Police said dealing with and reducing thefts was a priority for officers in Shirley. They have been working with retailers and loss prevention officers to reduce offending.
