A SERIES of overnight motorway closures near Birmingham Airport have been announced.

National Highways began work around junction six of the M42 began on Monday (September 22) and the scheme is set to continue November.

This weekend a viaduct is set to be launched across the 6 northbound and southbound carriageways, including the M42 junction 7a northbound link for the M6 southbound.

National Highways says this will involve closing the M6 in both directions between junctions 4 to 4a, including the M42 junction 7a to M6 southbound, between Saturday September 27 and Sunday 28 ahead of a planned reopening on Monday September 29.

The viaducts will ultimately carry HS2 trains over the M6 near Birmingham Airport, Birmingham Business Park and the NEC in Solihull.

From October 1 to 16, the M42 southbound between junctions 6 and 5a will be closed overnight from 9pm until 5am.

The M42 northbound between junctions 5a and 6 will be closed on October 17 and 20 to 27 overnight.

And between October 28 and 30 the M42 southbound between junctions 7a and 6 (including link from M6 J4a). Motorists are being urged to follow a diversion route on the M42 J9 to A446, A452 and A45

The A4545 northbound and M42 northbound between junctions 5 and 6 will be closed from October 28 to 31 and November 3 to 11.

From November 12 to 14 M42 junction 5a northbound exit slip road and A4545 northbound will be closed overnight.

National Highways says it will reopen the B4438 Catherine de Barnes Lane bridge on November 14.
