INTREPID explorers braved the elements as they took on a 10km trek in memory of a Shirley man.

Family and friends of Steve Owen marked his 60th birthday on July 6 with a walk across the Malvern Hills in aid of Solihull’s Marie Curie hospice.

James Owen, Steve’s son said: “The walk was a challenging 10km trek up steep hills, and we faced all kinds of weather, including hail.

“Despite these tough conditions, our team of 30 amazing people and two spirited dogs completed the walk.

“This route held special significance for our family, as it was the last one my mum and dad took together in August 2022.

“Ever since Dad was diagnosed in August 2023, Marie Curie has been amazing.”

The group raised over £14,000, smashing their target of £10,000 in memory of Steve who died in May.

The Marie Curie Hospice in Solihull offers around the clock specialist in-patient care, a Support and Wellbeing Hub, hospice care at home and bereavement support to adults, children, and young people.

James added: “The nurses and doctors dedicated their time and care to ensure his comfort and well-being, always going above and beyond. They have been our rock, offering comfort, guidance, and unwavering support when we needed it most.

“Their dedication and kindness have helped us get through difficult times with strength and hope and hopefully the money we have raised will help them continue their essential work for families like ours who need their support in the future.”

Ben Thomas, Marie Curie community fundraiser, said: “The money raised from their 10km walk means Marie Curie could deliver 600 hours of expert nursing care to people with any illness they are likely to die from including Alzheimer’s (and other forms of dementia), heart, liver, kidney and lung disease, motor neurone disease, Parkinson’s, and advanced cancer.”
