A SOLIHULL swimmer will be joining Team GB at the European Youth Artistic Games this summer.

Magdalena Townsend competes with the Great British artistic swimming youth squad at the City of Birmingham swimming club.

Her Mum, Magdalena Snr said: “Magdalena has always been a water baby, swimming and artistic swimming formerly synchronised swimming, from around the age of 6.

“Over the years Magdalena has progressed in both speed and artistic swimming programmes ran by the City of Birmingham swimming club, achieving regional honours in both sports.”

At the age of 11 she secured a place in the Great British artistic swimming youth squad.

During lockdown the 13-year-old competed for her club and Great Britain in a number of virtual national and international competitions.

Following the pandemic Magdelana has been made captain of the national artistic youth squad and spends her half terms at Hengrove Leisure centre in Bristol training at the national artistic swimming hub with all the squad members from around the country.

This, along with the eight weekly training sessions in pools in around Birmingham and Solihull means she is a prepared as possible for international competition.

Last year Magdalena competed in the inaugural European Youth Artistic Games in Croatia.

This year she will be heading back to Croatia ahead of this years’ European Youth Artistic Games in France.

Dependent on results the ultimate goal this season will be to compete in the world youth artistic games in America s in August.

Magdalena Snr added: “Next season Magdalena hopes to trial and compete in the youth category again before hopefully switching to the junior squad in a years’ time and then well we will have to wait and see.”
